A Little of Clark

Monday, January 23rd, after school. 2:52-5:15 p.m. This time I hiked a little of the Clark Trail-up half of a hill to a rock formation that overhangs the river. The view of the Mississippi is from the third vista on the Lewis Trail--and the pond is located about a mile and a half or so before the end of the trail.

It was 45 degrees today; the sun came out after I had hiked about a mile. It stayed sunny for the
duration of the 5-6 mile hike.

St. Francois Park: South Loop of Pike Run Trail (and spur to the backpack camp)

Monday, January 16 (MLK Day)

Four hour hike at St. Francois State Park right off of Highway 67 South, at the most 45 minutes to an hour outside of St. Louis. The Southern Loop of the Pike Run Trail is around 6. 25 miles long, but you can also hike down to the very spacious back pack camp. This park has lots of spots to camp (see photo). Hiked around 4 hours, saw only two people on horseback and two other hikers. Apparently moonshiners used to hide their stills in this area, which is now part of the Coonville Creek Wild Area. It was 67 degrees and windy.

One of the niftiest aspects of this park is that it is located on the Big River and their are many, many fairly spacious camping and picknicking spots on the river. Some of the picnic spots have very private access to the water and the beach.

Coffee on the Mississippi

Sunday, January 16th, 2012
Can't believe I live this close to the Mississippi River--only two miles--so close that I can take a thermos down to Bellerive Park and enjoy hot coffee on a cold morning overlooking the river.

Sunday, January 8, 2012: Greensfelder

Hiked one hour. From the Beulah Shelter to the overlook at the Osage Campground, down the hill to the Eagle Trail. Followed Green Rock up to the road, took a connector trail to the Beulah Shelter. Lots of bicyclists in the park and a couple of horsewomen with their friendly black lab. About 45 degrees, cloudy.
